Objective: Inform the public about the goods, and the bads about the George junior republic and give the pubic and adequate understanding about the GJR. I've been discharged from the George Junior Republic for over a year, so some of my memories are sort of a blur, but I can explain more mainly because my stay there was extended. Information on the GJR is limited through the Internet and directory mainly because it's confidential.
The George Junior Republic
should be disassembled
Before I explain to you my thoughts and opinions of the place, let me first explain to you what it is. The George Junior Republic is a juvenile detention center/ boarding school/ private school on the out skirts of Pittsburgh ( Grove city) in Pennsylvania. It's made to “modify” the student's behavior, but the way I see it, the GJR doesn't help. When I was first laid eyes on the GJR it was a clean and sanitary, and it seem like it helps the students, so I was enthusiastic about being there, until I was actually there, when I first came there in the orientation, they made me register and gave me a point card, I look at the point card in confusion, but little did I know my entire life would totally revolve that point card, and this even leads me to believe that it can even be psychologically damaging for the student. The point system for level one starts at 600,000 and is weaned each day as you do your basic task and volunteers, but beware because if you do something that they consider wrong you will get a consequence which is a deduction of points, even if you lived by what they considered wrong all your life, it's mentally excruciating. If you act out one day, then it can result in a sub system. Before I continue I will explain a few of the GJR vocabulary terms.
GJR vocabulary
Subsystem- when you gain 50,000 or more negatives points at one time, and your level system is on halt.
Hole punch- when you act out in class you get a whole punch, there is three levels of the whole punch #1 #2 and #3.
cottages- little individual homes with a limit of 16 students in each
CP/ cottage parent- the person that expectantly watches you and give you negative and positive points
Accepting criticism- say “I accept my negative criticism I know what I did was wrong, is their any way I can earn positive points back please” to get ¼ of negative points back.
Corrective action- get ¼ points back for completing what you did wrong
CIU (crisis intervention unit)- sort of like a detention center, with in the detention center (laughs), it's a pretty stupid idea, for the students that act up or need serious psychological help.
Special needs- for students that are incapable of following the instruction either because they act out or because they are mentally incapable.
“yeah, that's not too bad, do what you are told then you
will leave”
This is what most adults say about the situation, but it's more complicated than that, and if you were a student there you will understand why....
Student para dime
1.)Sometimes If your cottage parent(CP) don't like you, then he can bring you down as long as they like, needlessly give you negative points, which can result in my case, extended time at GJR.
2.)Caused student to be obsessed with doing the “right thing” and cause them to do chores excessively, and when they are given negative points they feel like their entire life has fallen,.
